Thermographic Camera
A Thermographic Camera (also known as an infrared camera or thermal imager, thermal imager, or thermographic camera) is a machine that creates an image using infrared (IR) radiation, similar to a regular camera that forms an image by visible light. However, instead of the 400 to 700 nanometer (nm) range of the visible light camera, infrared cameras are responsive to wavelengths from about 1,000 nm (1 micrometre, or μm) to about 14,000 nm (14 μm). The practice of capturing and analyzing the information they provide is called thermography. You can send your article to contact@technologyify.com.

What Can Thermal Cameras Detect?

The heat detect by an infrared camera can be measured very precisely, allowing for various applications. For example, a FLIR thermal camera can see slight differences in heat (as small as 0.01°C) and display them as shades of grey or with different colour palettes.

Same image with heat differences shown on hot and iron bow paddles.

Everything we encounter in our daily lives emits thermal energy, even ice. The hotter something is, the more thermal energy it emits. This emitted thermal energy is called a “thermal signature.” When two objects next to each other have even subtly different heat signatures, they show up quite clearly on a thermal sensor, regardless of lighting conditions. This allows thermal imaging cameras to see in complete darkness or smoky environments.

What is Thermal Radiation?

Any matter above absolute zero (-459.67°F) emits electromagnetic radiation depending on its temperature. This property is called blackbody radiation. Around room temperature, most objects emit this radiation in infrared wavelengths. As their temperature increases, things begin to emit light in the visible spectrum, starting with a faint red glow before becoming warm white (meaning it covers most of the visible spectrum) and finally releasing most of the visible spectrum of this energy in ultraviolet wavelengths and beyond.

Infrared Light

Infrared, or IR, light consists of long wavelengths beyond our visual perception of the closest red wavelengths in the visible spectrum. All electromagnetic radiation carries energy, but matter absorbs infrared light more efficiently, increasing its kinetic energy and thus increasing its temperature. Since all matter emits infrared light due to blackbody radiation and is a function of its temperature, accurately detecting infrared radiation can allow us to create a thermal image.
